Newport 1969
I was in the audience on Friday night. The main thing that I remember was the set by Roland Kirk. I don't think I was alone in having never heard of him before. The rest of the bands were all rock and roll, which is why I was there. Kirk was led onstage with three saxes hanging from his neck and playing one of them like the sound of a train whistle. The band came in with the rhythm of the train and the whistle flowed into the melody. At that point I don't think I was alone in thinking "Wow, who is this guy?" Poor Jeff Beck had to follow Kirk's performance, and it wasn't easy.
