ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

June 20th is the day before the Summer Solstice. The Summer Solstice being the longest day of the year.
Summanus was a deity of evening or nocturnal lightning, while Jupiter (or Zeus) was a deity of diurnal or daytime lightning.

Round cakes called summanalia, made of flour, milk and honey and shaped as wheels, were offered to the god of nocturnal thunder, Summanus, as a token of propitiation: the wheel might be a solar symbol. Summanus also received a sacrifice of two black oxen. Dark animals were typically offered to chthonic deities.
